What Are Mica Gaskets?

Mica gaskets are manufactured from layers of mica paper—typically phlogopite or muscovite mica—bonded with high-temperature resistant binders such as silicone resin or inorganic materials. Depending on the design and application requirements, mica gaskets can be manufactured in several forms:

• Rigid gaskets and insulation washers
• Custom mica sealing parts
• Metal-reinforced mica gaskets with stainless steel foil, mesh or perforated metal reinforcement

These mica gasket materials provide good compressive strength, low thermal conductivity, excellent electrical insulation and outstanding thermal stability for high-temperature sealing applications. Certain phlogopite mica grades can withstand temperatures up to around 1000°C (1832°F) depending on the operating environment.

The gasket can be produced from different mica materials, including phlogopite mica, muscovite mica and synthetic mica-based insulation materials. The choice of mica type depends on the thermal and electrical requirements of the application.
